Pirates lead Makhanya race!

Orlando Pirates have emerged as favourites to sign JDR Stars’ Moeketsi Makhanya, as the player continues to impress with his performances in the second tier of South African football.

Following his impressive performances and form of last season, after helping JDR to promotion through the ABC Motsepe League’s play-offs, Makhanya has continued with that form this campaign.

Prior to the start of the season, Makhanya had been linked with clubs in the Absa Premiership, most notably Cape Town City and AmaZulu FC. However, JDR managed to hold on to him for their first season in the professional ranks. He has now made it onto one of the Soweto giants’ radar. According to a source in the know, Orlando Pirates are keen on him.

“Pirates is interested in Moeketsi Makhanya of JDR Stars, with the club keen on offering him a contract,” confirmed the source.

“You must remember that Makhanya is the same player that finished as the top goalscorer in the Vodacom (ABC Motsepe) League with JDR Stars when they were promoted to the NFD (now GladAfrica Championship). He was also the best player of the play-offs. He is not even a striker but a winger. Pirates is showing serious interest in him. There are other PSL clubs interested in the boy, but Pirates is leading the race for now for his services,” the source added.

Contacted for comment, the player’s agent, Ratshibvumo Mulovhedzi of Rush Hour Sports Management, told said, “Well, all I can say is that JDR Stars boss Nditsheni Nemasisi played a big role in discovering Moeketsi Makhanya, and is still continuing to play a big role in helping the boy to improve in his career. And if they are interested in the player, they will need to talk to the Chairman, Nemasisi.”

Mulovhedzi added that the winger reminds him of the late Sinethemba Jantjie. “I’d like to add that, in my eyes, the boy is the new Sinethemba Jantjie. I see a future Bafana Bafana player in him.”

Makhanya has scored three goals and created several for his teammates during JDR’s impressive first season in the GladAfrica Championship that has seen the team move to the top of the log and establish themselves as one of the contenders for promotion to the Absa Premiership.
