Rhulani Mokwena is expected to be at Orlando Pirates for the next six months. According to the information made available, the coach’s contract will expire in June and he is expected to honour it. However, his current situation at the club is believed to be up in the air and indications are that he is planning for his future beyond the Buccaneers.
The young tactician, who took charge of the Bucs bench following Milutin Sredojevic’s departure in August, resumed his duties as assistant coach following the appointment of Josef Zinnbauer at the helm in December.
Evidently Mokwena is unhappy with his situation at the club. He was clearly unenthusiastic following Pirates’ 3-1 victory over Black Leopards on December 21. The win was Zinnbauer’s first, in his first game as head coach of Bucs. Insiders have revealed that there seems to be some ice between Mokwena and the new German head coach, with indications that the two are not seeing eye-to-eye. And, in the process, Fadlu Davids has gained Zinnbauer’s confidence as his first assistant, even more so following Mokwena’s absence from the bench this past weekend. Mokwena did not travel with the team to face Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday afternoon, although it has since been revealed that he made his annual trip to the United Kingdom, where he often visits Liverpool FC for educational purposes, and importantly, has gone with the club’s blessings.
Insiders, however, have informed the Siya crew that Mokwena is keen on landing a head coach role. Having led Pirates for a short stint, indications are that the young and promising mentor wants to continue with his growth as a coach, but as a number one and not as an assistant. And the crew has been informed that the tactician is assessing his options...
It was reported by the Siya crew in the past that AmaZulu FC had shown an interest in Mokwena, although at the time, he had the big responsibility of taking over from Sredojevic. AmaZulu subsequently appointed Jozef Vukusic. It remains to be seen if Usuthu rekindle their interest at some point, though any interested suitors will only have the opportunity to approach him at the end of the season, once his contract with the Soweto giants expires.
He is our son, I wouldn't want to see him leave... Preferably I'd like for him to get a breakthrough and get a coaching opportunity overseas.
