Pirates given green light for Hlongwa return

Highlands Park are open to allowing defender Brian Hlongwa to return to his parent club Orlando Pirates in the current transfer window, according to coach Owen da Gama.

It was reported in December that the Buccaneers, who are still desperately looking to beef up their centre-back options, are contemplating on cutting short the loan spells of both Hlongwa at Highlands and Sandile Mthethwa at Chippa United.

Hlongwa, in particular, has not made any official appearances for the Lions of the North since joining them late in August and Da Gama ex-plained to the crew why.

“We initially had a lot of injuries at the beginning of the season and we brought Hlongwa in very late. We also signed three new defenders in Limbikani Mzava, Abdi Banda and Sifiso Mbele on top of the ones that were already here,” said Da Gama.

“But then there were inconsistencies with injuries and, as more play-ers come back, it’s become harder for Brian to play.”

Da Gama confirmed that if Pirates wanted the player back, they were obviously entitled to do so given that he is permanently on their books.

“The agreement, as far as I know, is that Brian is our player on loan for the rest of the season. I am not sure if they can take him back in January, I don’t know if that clause is there. But he is definitely their player. They can have him back if they want him because he is their player,” the coach told the Siya crew.

  1. Mthethwa looks like a more formidable centre back that we need. He's calm, stern and good on the air.
