The Dynamic Iron Duke Dr. Irvin Khoza officialy became the Chairman of Orlando Pirates F.C. in 1992 but it was in 1993 that signs of his quality in Leadership began to show after sorting out all the Internal Challenges that were hampering the progress of the Club.
The playing squad was reinforced n The 1993 Iwisa Soccer Spectacular was a perfect Pre-Season Tournament to parade new signings. The Tournament dates back to 1986 n Pirates were yet to win it.
The first Semi Final was between Mamelodi Sundowns n Iwisa Kaizer Chiefs. The Phefeni Glamour Boys thrashed The Shoe Shine n Piano boys 3-1
The 2nd Semi Final saw The Mighty Buccaneers locking horns with Amazulu F.C. Usuth'Olumabheshu ankone abafana basembelebeleni...hheeebe!!! The Sea Robbers cruised 3-0 to the Final.
Sailing with the Bucs Ship were new signings Ettiene Ntsunda, David Nyathi, Pio Noguera just to name a few.
The final was a typical Soweto derby....tensions are always high. Before Kick Off there was a clash of jersey colours n no team wanted to change. A toss was made n Chiefs had to change.
Finally the game kicked off n it was Pio Noguera who rattled the net in the 15th minute announcing his arrival in South Africa. A few minutes later Ettiene 'Mvumbi' Ntsunda doubled the lead for the Mighty Bucs...there was still a long way to go n despite Pirates dominating the game Chiefs were putting up a great fight n it was no suprise when Albert Balwya reduced the deficit at the stroke of half time.
After the break the Phefeni outfit came out smoking n put pressure on the Bucs defense. The pressure paid off as Bricks Mudau headed in the equaliser for Amakhosi. The game seems to have gone the other way but Bucs Captain on the day Nick 'Bazooka' Seshweni sealed the victory for the Mighty Bucaneers with 5 minutes to go.
Orlando Pirates won the Iwisa Maize Meal Soccer Spectacular for the very first time since 1986...The Iron Duke has arrived...The Ghost bags The Bragging rights..beer was sold at half price
