Following a report last week that Wayne Sandilands was likely to extend his stay at Orlando Pirates, the goalkeeper’s agent has now confirmed that talks are indeed ongoing.
The 36-year-old experienced player has entered into the final year of his initial three-year contract with the Buccaneers, having joined the Soweto giants in 2017 on a free following his time with Mamelodi Sundowns. And the 36-yer-old has enjoyed a purple patch this season under coach Josef Zinnbauer.
“I can confirm that preliminary talks have started between Wayne and Pirates and this actually started before the nationwide lockdown. As you can imagine, there is not much happening at the moment and we had only just started the process,” Steve Kapeluschnik, who represents Sandilands, told the Siya crew.
Alex Shahim from Revolve Talents had been coy on the latest regarding the player last week, which is understandable given that he manages Sandilands’ commercial interests and would not have been directly involved in negotiations over a new deal at Pirates.
This latest update will come as good news for the veteran goalkeeper with speculation rife that the club is looking to bring in his Maritzburg United counterpart Richard Ofori to the Soweto outfit next season.
It’s expected that one of the three keepers at Pirates at the moment could very well have to make space for Ofori, and Siyabonga Mpontshane has been earmarked as the likely sacrificial lamb because of his lack of game-time.
