Shonga’s crunch Pirates talks pending

As he approaches the end of his contract with Orlando Pirates, Zambian striker Justin Shonga is expected to hear from the club re-garding his future.

Shonga arrived at the Buccaneers in 2017, and as things stand, the three-year contract he signed with the club is set to expire at the end of the month.

However, the Soweto giants remain in the driving seat. Bucs have an option to extend the 23-year-old’s spell for a further two years, though the Chipolopolo international has been linked with an exit due to a lack of regular game-time.

Speaking to the Siya crew, the player’s agent, Michael Ngobeni of M Sport Management, confirmed that he is planning to have a meeting with Pirates to discuss Shonga’s future.

“I haven’t spoken with Pirates management as yet, as they are still closed. You can’t discuss important things like this over the phone. I mean, even if you try, you will be told that they are still closed. I am just waiting for the club to re-open (the) doors and take it from there,” he said.

“The most important thing is to engage the club and to understand their side of the story. Can they still use him or not? It would be good to hear their side of the story and the plans of the coach. When a player is contracted to a club, it doesn’t help to go aggressively without getting the facts.

“The club has two years of option (on Shonga’s contract). The option is one of those options which favour the club. But if Justin gets a chance to play (at Pirates), he still wants to fight for his position.

“After COVID-19, we will sit down with the club and discuss the possibilities. The club has never mentioned that they don’t want him anymore. But we really have to engage, as per norm, when the player is not playing,” Ngobeni added.

The representative says that he has been inundated with calls enquiring about the Zambian international’s availability, though it is clear that Bucs will make the final call on his immediate future.
