Orlando Pirates may have to look beyond Rwandan international Emery Mvuyekure in their search for a goalkeeper. It seems as though his current employers at Kenyan Premier League club Tusker are reluctant to part ways with him.
Mvuyekure has emerged as the latest player to be linked with the Buccaneers as the club’s goalkeeping department has become one of the focal points after what would seem as a disappointing season by their standards.
Pirates have conceded 26 goals in their 23 league outings played to date this season, while the club’s chances of winning the title have diminished as log leaders Kaizer Chiefs and second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns appear to be in a two-horse race.
AmaZulu FC’s Siyabonga Mbatha, Bidvest Wits’ Brandon Petersen and Richard Ofori from Maritzburg United are the other goalkeepers that the Buccaneers have been linked with, though Mbatha has since extended his stay in KwaZulu Natal and a decision on Petersen is yet to be made.
With Ofori, Maritzburg are keen to sell, though it’s clear that chairman Farook Kadodia is assessing the club’s options. As a result, indications are that Bucs are evaluating all their options, with Mvuyekure emerging as a potential target.
Tusker, however, have deflected the links. “The player in question has a running contract with the club,” Tusker medial liaison officer Diana Yonah told the Siya crew.
After some reports suggested that Mvuyekure’s contract was nearing an end, Tusker chair-man Daniel Aduda has been quoted in Kenya stating that the 27-year-old shot-stopper’s deal will, in fact, expire at the end of next year and that he will not be leaving the team.
Aduda subsequently indicated that there has been no official approach for the player, telling the Siya crew, “We have not been approached or contacted by anyone about the player.”
